If you have noticed that your Irises are not blooming as much as they used to, it’s probably because they have multiplied and have become crowded. Irises multiply quickly, and once they get too crowded, they stop blooming. The solution is to dig them up and divide them, as we demonstrate in this video. For details on how to plant and grow Irises, click here. For beginner gardeners, digging up and dividing Irises is probably the most challenging aspect of growing Irises. However, Irises are durable plants, so if you make a mistake, don’t worry. The remaining Irises will continue to multiply.

Step 1 – Use a clean and sharpened shovel such as Fiskars 46 Inch Steel D-handle Square Garden Spade (9667) to carefully dig a circle around the root bball of the iris or clump of irises.

Step 2 – Once you have a circle around the rootball, gently dig down through the roots and soil, and bring up the clump of irises (rootball).

Step 3 – Use a sharp knife and your hands to gently separate each iris so it can be planted individually.
