Why Plant Irises?

Irises bloom in the spring and they love full sun! Their blooms are unique, with a colorful bloom on top and another bloom hanging at the bottom, hence “bearded” iris. Irises are very easy to maintain.

How to Plant Irises

The most important aspect of planting irises is they like for their neck to be above ground. After planting irises, use your hand to move the soil off of the top of the bulb. Plant irises in a mixture of your natural soil, peat moss, and top soil (Scotts Company EG71140180 Earthgro Top Soil, 40-Pound).

How to Fertilize Irises

Irises don’t need to be fertilized very often, maybe once per year, in the fall, with a very light organic fertilizer(Espoma PT4 4-Pound Plant-Tone Organic 5-3-3 Plant Food).

How to Keep irises Blooming Year After Year

Irises multiply, so very few years, dig up a few of them so that you give the remaining plants more room to spread out. We use a Fiskars Garden Spade Shovel to dig up the irises. We purchased the Fiskars Garden Spade Shovel at Home Depot, which has an excellent Lawn and Garden Center. The Fiskars Garden Spade Shovel has a flat, sharp blade that makes a clean cut through the roots. A clean cut will help the transplanted irises to recover quickly and take root in their new location. Your family and friends will appreciate your gift of irises if you are feeling generous.
