When we turn the corner and walk down the hill, our Side Garden stands up and greets us everyday! I have always loved Side Gardens. When I was growing up, my parents had a Side Garden of Irises, Lilies, Roses, and Azaleas. Side Gardens are typically not as visible from inside the home, so when you go outside and turn the corner, it always a delightful surprise to see what’s blooming, and how well it’s blooming! For beginner gardeners, start with one plant that will be the centerpiece of your garden. Add plants that compliment your main attraction. Our Side Garden consists of:
- Barberry Shrub
- Lamb’s Ear (furry groundcover)
- Day Lilies
- Milkweed Bush
- White Asiatic Lilies
- Irises
- Red Roses
- Japanese Wildflower
- Golden Yarrow
- Tropical Red Cannas
- Gladiolas
- Sedum Matrona
- Chrysanthemums
- Sedum Autumn Joy
- Deep Burgundy Clematis Vine.
Our Side Garden is one of the most exciting areas of our entire landscape! It stays full and lush all Spring and Summer! To let you in on a secret, our neighbors are sooo jealous of our Side Garden, and we know it! When we first moved to the neighborhood, and began building our Side Garden, our neighbor would let his 2 Chow dogs outside without a leash. After a period of time, we began to realize that it was not coincidental. We believe our neighbor was purposely sabotaging our Side Garden! He did not want the competition of a gorgeous, striking garden adjacent to his deck and yard. Everytime he entertains on his deck, we see his guests admiring our Side Garden! How satisfying … Ahhhh
To build your own Side Garden, follow these 6 steps:
- Take one step at a time. If you have a horizontal space you are trying to fill, begin with each end of the space. Decide which plants will be appropriate, taking color, and height into consideration. If you notice, we have a deep burgundy color at each end of our Side Garden, Barberry Bush and Clematis Vine. They both have height
- Select your centerpiece. The centerpiece of our Side Garden is Golden Yarrow. The centerpiece should have volume, color and interest.
- Build out from there. Place the tall plants in the background and the shorter plants in the foreground.
- Plant perennials, which will minimize the amount of maintenance.
- Be sure to plant multiple colors, which makes the garden more interesting.
- If you live in an area that has 4 seasons, be sure to select a combination of plants that bloom in Spring, Summer, Autumn, and even Winter. If you plant with the 4 seasons in mind, you will always have something blooming in your Side Garden!
