The Value of Trees in Our Landscape

Why are trees valuable in our landscape? Here are 6 reasons:

  1. Trees are the bones and structure in our landscape. What does that mean? It means that in the dead of Winter, our landscape still has interest.
  2. Trees provide a kaleidoscope of colors, such as brilliant red, burnt orange, and golden brown.
  3. Trees provide volume. When trees are full of leaves, they take up lots of space. If you have large expanses to fill, trees are perfect fillers.
  4. Trees provide habitat and food for hundreds of species such as birds, butterflies, and squirrels.
  5. Trees add monetary value to the market value of your home. Ask your local Real Estate Agent about “curb appeal.”  If you are selling your home and competing with other homes for sale in your neighborhood, a home with beautiful lawns, gardens, and landscaping will be more appealing to the eye.
  6. Trees save energy dollars! Large trees provide a natural canopy which can shield your home from the hot sun. If your home faces south or west and receives the hot afternoon sun, a large leafy tree will provide shade and reduce air conditioning costs! Our huge Red Maple tree keeps the front of our home cool all summer!

The landscape of bare trees is stunning! The following article, by Adrian Higgins, Washington Post Garden Editor, takes a close look at the benefits of trees, and using this drab Autumn as a good opportunity to “upgrade” your landscape with new selections. For beginner gardeners, it’s important to have trees and shrubs in your landscape because they help maintain color and interest throughout the year!
