We visited historic Williamsburg, Virginia and discovered a large container of Vinca and Arborvitae (evergreen). Vinca are drought-tolerant plants with glossy leaves and dainty flowers. They are a member of the impatiens family of plants. The miniature evergreen in the container is of a common variety that stays green year-round.

Bonus Tip: @SacredGardenPDX says vinca smothers invasive plants in the garden, such as ivy …

For beginner gardeners, Vinca are very easy to maintain and are resistant to deer and rabbits. Vinca prefer morning sun or even a shady spot in your garden! To see more pics and videos of Vinca in our garden, click here. Check with your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, online Burpee Gardening or eBay for their selection of Vinca! We were so impressed with the Vinca we saw in Williamsburg, that we decided to grow Vinca at home! We used a large container similar to the container in Williamsburg. We also planted several Vinca plants just like the arrangement in Williamsburg.
