Snowmound Spirea has small white flowers that bloom in mid_Spring. The shrub blooms for about 2 weeks but it is worth the wait! The small white blooms look like a thin layer of snow! Bonus Tip for Beginner Gardeners: Spirea bushes are a good choice because they require very little maintenance.

We are experiencing an early Fall in the Mid-Atlantic area, so why not start preparing flowering shrubs for Fall/Winter? Flowering shrubs need a little more care and attention because they bloom in the Spring. To ensure beautiful Spring blooms and a healthy shrub, prepare for Fall/Winter by doing the following:

  1. Pruning in the Fall gives the cut branches a chance to heal and harden for the upcoming winter. Cool weather is easy on plants and humans, so get out your quality pruning shears, such as Fiskars 25-33 Inch Power-Lever Extendable Hedge Shear (9169), clean them with soap and water, and start shaping up your shrubs!
  2. Fertilizing in the fall provides nutrients the plant will need during the Fall/Winter months. As buds form in the Fall, the shrub expends more energy. Fertilizer replenishes the plant.
  3. Fall is the perfect time to inspect the shrub for signs of fungus, disease, infestation. We prefer to use organic products, such as Safer Brand Garden Fungicide Ready to Use 32 Ounces 5450. For insect infestation, we recommend Safer Brand 5118 Insect Killing Soap – 16-Ounce Concentrate.

We have a beautiful Neon Spirea shrub that we prune and fertilize in the fall.
