Early Spring is an excellent time to prune non-flowering shrubs and evergreens! Our Front Sidewalk Garden showcases a green and yellow Euonymus shrub, which provides color all year long. The leaves are glossy and showy. It requires very little maintenance; just prune with quality pruning shears such as Fiskars 25-33 Inch Power-Lever Extendable Hedge Shear (9169), to maintain shape. Fertilize with organic fertilizer Espoma PT18 Plant Tone, 18-Pound in early Spring. Unfortunately, deer also like euonymus, so keep an eye on the plant, and if you notice disappearing leaves and branches, spray with Bobbex deer repellent we recommend below.

Euonymus Shrub is very durable. It can be pruned anytime between early Spring and late Autumn.  The video below shows how to prune Euonymus shrub. Start with clean pruning shears such as Fiskars 25-33 Inch Power-Lever Extendable Hedge Shear (9169). Be sure to clean with a soapy solution and water. This prevents disease from transferring to your Euonymus Shrub!

We also have evergreen shrubs in our front sidewalk garden. If they grow too large, they prevent our Irises and Lilies from receiving full sun. Therefore, every Spring, we prune back the evergreen shrubs with a pair of quality pruning shears such as Fiskars 25-33 Inch Power-Lever Extendable Hedge Shear (9169).

It has been and cool and rainy Spring. Our Burning Bush has enjoyed the weather, and is large and lush this Spring! It’s a perfect opportunity to cut back Burning Bush before it gets too large …

  1. Make sure the pruning shears are clean
  2. Make sure the pruning shears have a sharp edge
  3. Make sure to cut “on the slant”
