Camellia “Yuletide”

Our huge Christmas Camellia is ready for the holidays! It’s sporting bright red and yellow blooms and is standing 10 feet tall. We purchased the Camellia at a plant nursery in Chincoteague, Virginia about 7 years ago. It was about 18 inches tall at that time. It’s very easy to grow and maintain. We fertilize about once per year with a special acidic fertilizer. We have never pruned the Camellia. Nature has a pruning machine called “deer.” As you will see in the video, deer have munched around the bottom of the Camellia even though we surrounded it with chicken wire. Oh well …

Camellias are considered broadleaf evergreens. They maintain their leaves throughout the year, so they provide structure, volume, and color in your landscape. Our Camellia is like an old friend in our garden, who provides beautiful blooms when it’s cold outside! If you are looking for an easy-maintenance shrub that blooms in late Fall/Winter, Camellia may be the shrub for you! For beginner gardeners, filling your garden with low maintenance perennials that bloom consistently is an investment that will return dividends year after year!
