The Early Fall Landscape
It’s early Fall in the Mid-Atlantic area of the U.S. and we have a landscape that is changing colors right before our eyes! From majestic trees like oak and maple, to barberry shrubs, and perennials such as Chrysanthemums, a kaleidoscope of colors has enveloped our garden! Oak trees provide the gold and burnt orange colors in our fall garden. They also provide habitat and food for hundreds of species, such as squirrels, birds, butterflies, and insects.

Barberry Shrubs
Barberry shrubs add interest to our Fall garden because they produce berries in the Fall. We have mockingbirds that build their nest right next to the Barberry shrub every year. We are sure that the mockingbirds are enjoying the berries each Fall. Barberry Shrub is a very low maintenance shrub that has many uses in your landscape. Here are 3 ways Barberry shrub can improve your landscape:

  1. If you would like to create a natural fence along your property line, Barberry shrub is a good choice. It provides color year-round, and it has stickers which discourage deer and humans from crossing the natural fence of barberry shrubs.
  2. If you grow vegetables, bees love Barberry shrub! It blooms small yellow flowers in early summer, which attracts honey bees.
  3. Barberry is very easy to maintain. Prune with pruning shears, such as Fiskars 25-33 Inch Power-Lever Extendable Hedge Shear (9169), to maintain shape. Fertilize with organic fertilizer Espoma PT18 Plant Tone, 18-Pound in early Spring.

Burgundy Barberry Shrub

Beautiful Fall colors are enhanced by shrubs that produce red berries. Golden Barberry shrub adds interest to your landscape because it changes colors with the seasons. Leaves are green in the Spring, yellow in the Summer, and turn reddish orange in the Fall.

Chrysanthemums
Chrysanthemums, or “mums” as they are commonly called, are colorful perennials that bloom in the Fall. They provide a multitude of colors to the Fall landscape. We like burgundy, gold, and magenta mums.

Red Salvia has beautiful red spiked flowers that attract hummingbirds to your garden! Even in the early Fall, you will see a few hummingbirds stop at your Red Salvia as they make their migration to warmer climates. Red Salvia like morning sun. Red Salvia will continue to bloom until the first hard frost, temperature below 32 degrees overnight. Here are 3 tips to keep Red Salvia blooming until the first hard frost:

  1. Continue to prune dead blooms using quality pruning shears, such as Fiskars Traditional Bypass Pruning Shears (91095935J), as shown in the video below.
  2. Continue to fertilize every few weeks, using our favorite organic fertilizer – Espoma FT18 Flower Tone, 18-Pound
