When we turn the corner and walk down the hill, our Side Garden stands up and greets us everyday! It is full of low maintenance perennials that return every year. We don’t have to buy and plant new flowers, shrubs and vines. We just remove dead growth in early Spring, prune and fertilize as needed. Of course, we pull pesky weeds when we spot them. Other than that, we thoroughly enjoy turning the corner and seeing our plant friends greet us every day! I have always loved Side Gardens. When I was growing up, my parents had a Side Garden of Irises, Lilies, Roses, and Azaleas. Side Gardens are typically not as visible from inside the home, so when you go outside and turn the corner, it always a delight to see what’s blooming! For beginner gardeners, start with one plant that will be the centerpiece of your garden. Add plants that compliment your main attraction. Our Side Garden consists of:
- Barberry Shrub
- Lamb’s Ear (furry groundcover)
- Day Lilies
- Milkweed Bush
- White Asiatic Lilies
- Irises
- Red Roses
- Japanese Wildflower
- Golden Yarrow
- Tropical Red Cannas
- Gladiolas
- Sedum Matrona
- Chrysanthemums
- Sedum Autumn Joy
- Deep Burgundy Clematis Vine.
