Groundhog Damage to Red Maple Tree

If you are a gardener, and have healthy trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals, they will attract wildlife to your garden and landscape! Last Autumn, we noticed a fat, furry, rodent-looking animal near the front of our home. We wondered what it was, but we weren’t alarmed. He probably spent the Winter living underground in our garden. Now that it’s early Spring, he is active. We noticed a hole near our Azaleas and we filled in the hole with large rocks.

Now that we definitely know we have a problem, we need to keep an eye out for holes and quickly fill them in. We also need to protect the tree from further damage by setting up a deterrent. We love our Red Maple tree! It provides numerous benefits to our home and landscape!

Stay tuned as we do all we can to save our Red Maple from the big bad groundhog! For beginner gardeners, it’s very important to keep an eye on your garden and notice any changes. There is a reason animals visit your garden … they are usually eating something that you value!

It is now Autumn and we have noticed holes in the ground near our home, which is evidence of groundhogs. We placed chickenwire around the base of the tree to stop the damage.
