We have a very tall, gorgeous Leland Cypress evergreen that is almost 30 foot tall! We purchased it for $3 about 10 years ago. At that time, it was about 8 inches tall and very vulnerable to deer. We planted in near our deck to provide screening and privacy. Fortunately, it grew quickly and fill out the space nicely. Our only concern was that deer absolutely love this evergreen, so we we sprayed an excellent deer repellent, Bobbex B550100 Concentrated Deer Repellent, 32-Ounce, to protect the evergreen.
Once the Leland Cypress grew to about 5 feet tall, we erected inexpensive DeerBlock Deer Fence and Netting (Reusable Protection For Trees and Shrubs From Animals) 7 feet x 100 feet to protect the Leland Cypress. Once it matures and it gets very tall, the deer leave it alone.
For beginner gardeners, evergreens are good choices because they are very easy to maintain. Once they are planted and established, the roots grow very deep so there is no need to water very often. Since the Leland Cypress grows large very quickly, you may need to prune it to keep it from outgrowing it’s space. In our case, heavy snows broke some of the branches, so we needed to cut off the damaged branches. To prune, make sure your pruning shears, Fiskars 23 Inch PowerGear Hedge Shears, are cleaned with soapy water. Cut the branch on the slant to keep water from pooling at the tip of the cut branch.
