It’s early Summer in the Mid-Atlantic area of the USA and our yellow Gladiolus are blooming! Gladiolus bulbs are very easy to plant. Plant them in the Autumn; dig a hole 6 inches deep and plant the bulb with the pointy side facing up. Fill the hole with soil, and water. In early Summer, they grow 3 – 5 feet tall, and reward you with a cluster of gorgeous flowers! They do like to be fertilized in the Spring. We use an organic fertilizer such as Espoma PT4 4-Pound Plant-Tone Organic 5-3-3 Plant Food. Since Gladiolus are tall and top-heavy plants, you will need to stake them to keep them from toppling over. We use Bosmere E503 Single Plant Stem Support 24″ High with 3″ Hoop, 3-Pack. For 5 reasons to grow Gladiolus, see below …
5 Reasons to Grow Gladious!
- Gladiolus are very tall plants, so they immediately attract attention to your garden! The cluster of flowers at the top of the stalk add a burst of color to your garden!
- Gladiolus are very easy to grow. They like 5 – 6 hours of sun per day, and be sure to water if the leaves begin to fade.
- Gladiolus are perennials, so once you plant them, you don’t need to plant every year.
- Gladiolus multiply on their own, so you can dig up a clump and move some to a different area in your garden.
- Gladiolus make great gifts if you would like to cut them and make a bouquet of flowers! It’s called a “Cutting Garden.”
