Virginia Beach is one of our favorite vacation spots. We love taking a walk along the boardwalk or Atlantic Avenue and discovering new landscaping such as flowers, shrubs and trees. We visited just after the Memorial Day weekend and the hydrangea were in full bloom! Gorgeous pastel colors of pink, lavender, purple and blue flower clusters greeted us as we entered the Hilton Garden Inn driveway! When we first noticed the huge shrub, we thought it was rhododendron since the shrubs are in the same family … Ooops! Two of our YouTube subscribers corrected us. Thanks Bengal Cat and silliaek!
Although we have not grown hydrangea in our garden, we have always admired this shrub that changes colors based on the level of acidity in the soil. To change the color of hydrangea blooms from pink to blue, add Espoma LL30 Organic Lightning Lime Fertilizer, 30 lb to the soil. A ph of 6.0 to 6.2 should produce blue hydrangeas. To determine the ph of your soil, check with your local garden center or extension service. To learn more about changing hydrangea colors click here.
