#Gardening in a #Pandemic! #gardeningtips

The entire world is in the midst of a Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic! Plant nurseries are closed. Home Depot is open during limited hours so there are long lines in the parking lots. State governors have issued stay-at-home orders. What’s a gardener to do? It’s planting season so we ordered seeds online from Park Seeds. This is our first experience with Parks Seeds. We googled “seeds” and Park Seeds popped up on the first page, so we looked at their website. They have loads of gorgeous flowers and a large variety, so we gave them a try.

We ordered a pack of 10 Wild Berry coneflower seeds. The coneflower seeds are tiny. Instructions say to sow the seeds at a depth of 3 to 4 times the length of the seed. We use a soil mix of top soil, peat moss, and clay soil (which is natural to the Mid-Atlantic area of the U.S.A.). Sprinkle water every day for 7 days. Seeds should germinate in 10 – 20 days.

It took 19 days for the seeds to germinate.

The seedling has been growing for 5 weeks. As you can see, coneflowers seedlings grow very slowly …

One day, we hope our Wild Berry coneflowers growing from seed will look at gorgeous as the coneflowers we saw during a visit to our local library last year.
